New Passport Requirements:

The travel industry has launched a new website, to inform travelers about new passport requirements and on how to obtain passports. The purpose of the website is to also educate travelers about pending deadlines contained in the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) and provide easy access to passport information.

WHTI requires all air travelers to the U.S. to have a passport or other secure document by January 23, 2007, including Americans returning from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. In addition, all travelers by land and sea must meet this requirement by January 31, 2008.

As of January 31, 2008, a passport or enhanced driver's license, or a driver's license and your birth certificate will be required for passage into Canada. A driver's license on its own, or an oral declaration only, are no longer sufficient to cross the border. Children under the age of 18 will just need a birth certificate to cross the border.

The site is provided by the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of Passport Services/Customer Service, which designates many post offices, clerks of court, public libraries and other state, county, township, and municipal government offices to accept passport applications on its behalf.
