AGRI-TOURISM

“Agricultural Tourism” encompasses working farms and agricultural enterprises offering the visitor direct experience and education of the farm as an economic, social and cultural endeavor. Visitors from urban and suburban areas are sure to gain a greater understanding of local agriculture and its integration into life in Schuyler County.

AGRICULTURE IN WATKINS GLEN & SCHUYLER COUNTY :

According to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County,

More than 400 full and part-time farms are based in Schuyler County, covering 73,800 acres – 35 percent of the land area in the county.

Dairy is Schuyler County’s leading commodity, bringing in almost $10,635,000 in 2005.

4,800 milk cows produced 75,600,000 lbs. of milk, up from 67,200,000 lbs. in 1998

Schuyler County is home to 10,500 dairy and beef cattle. 1,300 sheep are raised in Schuyler County.

The value of Schuyler County’s fruit crops increased from $1,565,000 to $1,726,000 from 1998 to 1999.

120,000 acres of land in Schuyler County is timberland; most of this is valuable northern hardwood forests (maple, beech, oak, hickory, cherry)

Fifty-nine percent of the county is forested, including 37,300 acres of State and National Forests.

850 gallons of maple syrup were produced from 4,365 taps in Schuyler County’s forests in 2005.

Finger Lakes Farmstead Cheese produces two varieties of premium quality European styled farmstead cheeses: "Schuyler" is made in the Dutch farmstead Gouda tradition. And "Red Meck" is a red-washed French-style cheese, similar to the original Muenster.

The Cheesery uses fresh raw milk from our family farm. Cows graze from early spring to late fall; grazing keeps our herd happy and healthy, and is known for its positive effects on cheese flavor and quality.

SkyLand Gallery & Cafe **CHAMBER MEMBER**

SkyLand Farm is a 3,000 square foot Art Barn set amidst stone-walled gardens (including a cut-your-own bouquet garden), labyrinth; and feedable goats, sheep and chickens, overlooking Seneca Lake. Featuring an in-house pottery studio and the work of over 300 local, New York, and U.S. artists, exquisitely displayed amongst stained glass, wrought iron and handhewn beams. The Garden Room Café tempts with a large dessert and gelato (Italian ice cream) selection as well as light lunches and - new in 2007 - dinners! The Café is built around a two-story white oak tree with a spiral staircase winding through its branches, taking you up to the second floor for an overwhelming view of Seneca Lake. This is a true Finger Lakes Experience.

Farm Sanctuary **CHAMBER MEMBER**

The 175-acre New York Farm Sanctuary is set amidst rolling green hills and forests in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. Located next door to Sugar Hill State Forest, just west of Watkins Glen. It is a 45-minute drive west of Ithaca and a 1½-hour drive southeast of Rochester.  In addition to caring for hundreds of animals, Farm Sanctuary's New York facility receives thousands of visitors every year. The "People Barn," a unique visitor center, is filled with displays, literature and videos. It also includes the "Kids' Korner" and gift shop, where visitors will find a variety of items, including books, videos, posters and vegetarian snacks.
